Who am i?

Hi, I'm Brooke.

I have a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences with a Minor in Visual Arts.

I have a Certificate in Teaching from the University of Calgary and a Graphic Design Certificate from the New York Institute of Art and Design. I am currently a Neuroscience PhD Candidate at the University of Calgary, finishing in summer 2023.

I found a gap in the scientific community in the realm of art and scientific illustration. I decided to fill this gap by providing my services to those in my community. I specialize in scientific illustrations.

I have since expanded my focus and now provide comprehensive services in marketing and branding.

MY academic career

Certificate in graphic design

2019

New York Institute of Art and Design

I recently completed a certificate in graphic design from the New York Institute of Art and Design. Here I learned more about the fundamentals of graphic design and how to utilize different tools in Adobe to create beautiful pieces of graphic illustrations.

Phd in neuroscience

Brain aneurysms are small pockets caused by broken down blood vessels in the brain. They affect up to 5% of the population. Treatments are only 70% effective, requiring multiple surgeries. Stem cells may be a future option for aneurysm treatment. They are special cells which can fix damaged blood vessels. Placing them inside an aneurysm results in better healing. Tests show stem cells could benefit current treatments, but it is unknown how these cells help aneurysms. I am trying to figure out how stem cells repair aneurysms, which is critical to using them in future treatments.

CERTIFICATE IN TEACHING AND LEARNING

2020

Taylor Institute at the University of Calgary

As education has become a large part of my career, I decided to also pursue a certificate in university teaching and learning from the Taylor Institute at the University of Calgary. This program allows me to learn about teaching skills that are relevant across all disciplines. This program is aimed at increasing understanding of students learning, success and engagement. At the end of the program I will have built a robust docier that reflects my evolving experiences, goals and skills as an educator.

BSc in Biology &

minor in visual arts

2013-2017

University of Calgary

While completing my bachelor's degree in biological sciences, I pursued a minor in visual arts and art history. This involved taking both Art History classes as well as Fine Arts classes. My specialty in fine arts is comprised of silk screen printing. My art history background is quite diverse and allowed me to study many cultures from a myriad of countries including Greece, Rome, France, the Netherlands, Japan, China, Canada and the United States among many others. This background in the arts has helped me in my science career as a graphic designer.
